Papillon is French for butterfly. Papillon dogs get their name because of the butterfly-like shape of their ears. Papillons are depicted in Italian frescoes from the Renaissance. Papillons are a very old European breed that has been around for over 700 years. A myth exists that Marie Antoinette carried her Papillon on her way to the guillotine.
